Routes - Road Cycling / Tour de France
In case the outstanding scenery and breathtakingly peaceful atmosphere of the Yorkshire Dales isn't enough for you, why not try the actual route of the Tour de France that makes Wensleydale irresistible to most cyclists. The Stage 1 route of the Grand Depart 2014 ran just a mile away from our first store in Askrigg (we are now based in Hawes) where our bike shop is located. The historic occasion took place on Saturday the 5th July 2014 with riders cycling 190km.
Their journey took them from Leeds travelling through the Yorkshire Dales National Park passing along Wharfdale, Wensleydale and Swaledale before heading to Harrogate. The stage was won by Marcel Kittel. The fantastic feature of the tour is that you can experience the same views and roads as the professionals did. The stage includes a stunning journey through Buttertubs pass, Park Rash, Kidstons and Grinton moor. Quiet roads await with outstanding scenery and 3 classified climbs that will test the most experience rider...
However there is plenty more to experience away from the tour route. A great ride is the Tan Hill Toughie. Experience the climbs and charms of the most remote areas of the Dale and visit the highest pub in England at the same time.
If you wish to take in the wonderful landscape at a different pace, then cycle touring is a great way to explore the area for a totally different experience on a day ride. The Yorkshire Dales Cycleway (YDCW) takes you on a fantastic tour of the National Park crossing wonderful landscapes of heather moorland, dramatic limestone scenery connected by beautiful valleys and villages.
The Way of the Roses takes you through the South of the Dales while the Pennine Cycleway passes through and the Lancashire and West Yorkshire Cycleway bringing you into the Dales.
Family rides are also possible in the Dales and we can suggest quiet routes where you'll meet few cars during your tour of the stunning scenery. Stage 1 Cycles is an excellent resource for any road cyclist. We will happily advise on route choice, hire you all the kit for the day or repair your own bike.
We also have Ridely Cyclocross bikes available for a demo experience that you will never forgot. Get in touch for more information about any aspects of Road Cycling in the Yorkshire Dales.
Routes - Off-Road
Wensleydale is a archetypal Dale, fast flowing rivers winding between steep hill sides, regimented by drystone walls and dotted with barns. The trails are on a mixture of surfaces from wide stone tracks to heather moorland and paths over limestone grassland. Riding these routes can be technical, tough but incredibly varied and fantastic fun. There can be few more spectacular places to start rides from than spots like Asygarth Falls with the River Ure crashing over a series of spectacular waterfalls.
With over 900km of legal riding to go at, there is more than enough to keep most riders busy. Popular routes include the Tour of Wensleydale taking in Castle Bolton and Asygarth Falls travelling along a mixture of fast stone track and routes over limestone grassland as well as some short sections of tarmac. There is a long climb from Cubec up to the Stake Allotments but the descent into Thoralby is worth it.
Stage 1 Cycles is an essential stop in any mountain bikers itinerary. If you have all the gear then we can provide you with a route to suit your skill, experience and wish list. Alternatively if you need to hire a mountain bike, we have high quality adult mountain bikes and junior bikes to get you on the way. Repairs and sales are also available.
Every Wednesday an informal mountain bike club have a ride out in all weathers. All are welcome! Get in touch for more information about any aspects of mountain biking in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
We sell an OS route map, which features 8 different routes around the dales for £3.

Electric Bikes
E Bikes are a real revolution in cycling. Riders still pedal just like a regular bicycle – but when you need it there's a powerful, invisible boost - which makes cycling accessible regardless of how fit you are and how many hills there are between you and home. Electric bikes are therefore an ideal entry point into cycling and make for an excellent alternative to using the car for short journeys.
